Guidance for Partners
Please identify your role as a Street Partner or Sidewalk Partner, review the associated guidelines for successful and safe participation, and submit a Street & Sidewalk Partner Application. We’ll help you design your guest engagement.
Street Partners are Asheville-based businesses and organizations (usually with wellness and community advocacy interest) that educate & entertain guests with free activities in the car-free streets. Examples: YWCA, scout troop.
Sidewalk Partners are businesses physically located on the route that embrace event guests in creative, sales-oriented ways: think sidewalk sales & pop-up cafes! Your involvement adds sparkle to our event and builds your bottom line.
Street Partner Guidance
Businesses, non-profits, and interest groups may apply to become Street Partners who present the universal experience of Open Streets Asheville: hands-on activities enjoyed by all in deliciously car-free streets.
An open streets activity is a fun, interactive experience open to every event guest that educates or entertains and incorporates some type of art, movement, self-expression and/or community-building.
Activities presented by Street Partners engage guests actively with a playful task or tasks. This interaction immerses guests in the event themes (building health & wellness; building community; and building Asheville’s future). Activities tend to be simple in nature and short in length, usually engaging a guest (and possible companions) for 2-10 minutes.
Open Streets Asheville is an event designed to open space for active community. We differ from most street festivals both in our very brief duration (a four-hour footprint) and in our intentional exclusion of tent use.
A Street Partner provides
- a fun activity freely shared with every guest
- a lightweight, quick set-up table (if desired) and all supplies needed
- a tent only if granted an approved-tent badge for extenuating circumstances; badge must be visible on tent
- two or more people to host the activity
- business or group information for guests (if desired) and/or giveaways (if desired)
Street Partners may not
- make sales (but may offer printed business or group information, a sign-up list, coupon, etc.)
- mechanically amplify sound
- use tents (groups using a tent without an approved-tent badge on display will be directed to remove the tent)
- use electricity or fire
Our event goal is to fill the streets with active community and encourage movement. While we will have a few official tents for First Aid, HQ/Info and so on, street partners should not expect to use a tent unless they are contacted specifically by Open Streets staff and provided a badge granting exemption to our no-tent policy given extenuating circumstances submitted with their application.
If inclement weather threatens, event guests and street partners should be prepared to shelter indoors at participating route shops and restaurants as needed until the shower passes. Be sure to pack in waterproof containers (such as Rubbermaid Tough Totes) and bring appropriate clothing for inclement weather.
Generating the sound of active community (think laughter, bike bells and children’s voices) is a goal; for this reason, amplified music is not permitted.

Sidewalk Partner Guidance
Sidewalk Partners are businesses with a permanent address on the event route. Businesses may use their storefront’s sidewalk area instead of the street for sales displays or activities, if they so choose (always keeping 6′ clear along the sidewalk for pedestrian and handicapped access as required by the City).
Sales are fully permissible and special sales events encouraged for shops and restaurants along the route. Open Streets Asheville is, in part, a celebration of you and the active community your iconic neighborhood supports; we work to promote you as providers of guest enjoyment (snacks/meals, shopping, or relaxation) during the four-hour event.
Consider posting signage welcoming event guests and promoting a special sales event. Consider expanding your offerings into the sidewalk area, hosted by smiling staff.
You may choose to draw activity to your storefront by hiring an acoustic musician, beloved busking group, or performance artist to your location. Advertise your involvement on social media before the event; share event information to help make Open Streets bigger and better! We will promote your known details in advance as well.
According to our event design (and permitting), restaurants may serve at pop-up dining areas in the street just outside the establishment, but no cooking takes place outdoors. Alcohol may not be served outdoors.
Because our event promotes the sights and sounds of active community, amplified music is not permitted.
We hope you enjoy helping to shape Asheville’s future at Open Streets Asheville on September 17th. Apply here.
